The Assistance League of Santa Monica Thrift Shop is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and families in need throughout the Santa Monica Bay Area. Founded in 1937, the organization relies on 84 member volunteers who develop and run philanthropic programs in partnership with local school districts.

Beyond their community impact, the Assistance League is committed to environmental sustainability through energy efficiency, waste reduction, and pollution prevention. They are in process of upgrading over 300 fluorescent tubes to LEDs and implemented a composting program for food and landscape waste. Plastic bags from donations are upcycled, and electronic waste is tested or repaired before resale, or responsibly recycled.

Staff training provided by the City of Santa Monica RRR (Resource, Recovery, Recycling) Team  supports their waste diversion efforts.  The thrift shop replaced toxic cleaners with EPA Safer Choice certified and natural alternatives.

They purchase 100% renewable energy from California’s Clean Power Alliance, Santa Monica’s local community choice aggregation (CCA) provider.
